OK - so our Professional range of fonts features hand-hinting. But what's so special about hand-hinting?

Font hinting is a very time-consuming craft. For this reason, many font manufactures use computer programs to generate hints automatically. These programs, depending on their quality, may produce adequate results for standard fonts, but only the skillful hand of a craftsman can produce perfect results. A font is not just a collection of unrelated shapes - all the letters need to be connected by hinting to produce a pleasing result on paper or screen. In the good old days, when different sets of fonts were made for different point sizes, the craftsman would make each point size slightly different. They knew that people see different sizes differently and they knew how to modify the characters so that each font size would look the same. Now this skill has been translated into hinting.

While there are various methods of automatic hinting, none of them is satisfactory by professional standards; one of the most common drawbacks being the heavy looks of the characters on screen and paper. That's why hand-hinting is so important for the very best results.

Electronic Font Foundry never compromises on quality and is dedicated to supplying the highest quality typefaces.
